Wakayama’s Prefectural Flower

Japanese apricot

As versatile as it is beautiful Japanese apricot was adopted by Fukuoka (official flower), Ibaraki (tree), Oita (flower and tree) and Wakayama (flower).

Native to China and Japan, the flowering apricot, as it is also called, grows to 15-20 feet with a rounded canopy. It is prized primarily for its blossoms, though its fruit is used to make jam, brandy and other items. Several cultivars are grown, blossoming various shades of pink and white; Oita adopted a variety called bungoume (Prunus mume var. bungo).
