On March 1918, the dogwood was adopted as the state flower of Virginia, where Thomas Jefferson had grown dogwoods at “Monticello” as early as 1771. The dogwood was supported by the Garden Club of Virginia and the Garden Club of Norfolk. (One legislator proposed the Virginia creeper, which reportedly lost by just one vote.)
The dogwood also represents Missouri and North Carolina as state flower or tree.
