Toyama’s Prefectural Bird

The rock ptarmigan is the official bird of the prefectures of Gifu, Nagano (adopted on November 3, 1961) and Toyama. This member of the grouse family is at home in the Japan Alps and is most abundant in Toyama, according to the prefectural website.

In ancient Japan, ptarmigan were revered as messengers of the gods.
