The Chinese bayberry was designated Tokushima’s official tree on September 13, 1966, but it has a much older history. It was given special government protection in the “Awa-han” days. Thriving even on barren land, it was planted in forests as a fertilizing tree.
Tokushima Prefecture is famous for the yamamomo fruit this tree produces, which turns bright red in early summer and is beloved for its sweet and sour taste.
