Shizuoka’s prefectural tree is known locally as the mokusei or ginmokusei. Its English names include sweet osmanthus, sweet olive and tea olive. This rare evergreen has clusters of cream-colored miniature flowers and emits an orange blossom fragrance during fall and winter.

Its delicious fragrance has long made this member of the olive family popular for use in gardens and hedges. It is planted in warm regions, where it thrives on sunny, moist soil.
