Shizuoka’s Prefectural Bird

Asian paradise-flycatcher

The Japanese paradise-flycatcher ranges from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to Japan. According to the prefectural website, it is known as the summer bird because it migrates to Japan at the end of April. Its chirping makes sounds liketuski (“moon”), hi (“sun”), hoshi (“star”) and hoihoihoi, lending it the nickname sankoucho (Three Shining Bird). The paradise-flycatcher dwells at the foot of Mt. Fuji and in various other places around Shizuoka.
