In 1988, Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources asked children aged nine to eleven to vote for a provincial bird. Popular choices included the American robin, Canada goose, mallard, ruby-throated hummingbird, and great blue heron. One person submitted a bill to adopt the blue jay.

The common loon won, though it wasn’t officially adopted until June 23, 1994. The common loon also serves as neighboring Minnesota’s state bird.
