OKLAHOMA...Four southern states have each adopted three wild mammals as state symbols. Texas and Oklahoma each adopted three land mammals, while Mississippi selected two land mammals and a marine mammal. Florida is the only state with two official marine mammals.

State Animal

Oklahomans wisely took their time choosing a state animal. A bill to adopt the doe (female) deer as Florida’s state animal was passed by the Florida Senate in 1965. Fortunately, the House of Representatives rejected it. The razorback hog was also reportedly suggested as the state animal at one time.
