The old Ryukyu government declared the Ryukyu pine the prefectural tree on February 7, 1966. After Okinawa was returned to Japan, Okinawa’s prefectural government reinstated the Ryukyu pine on October. 26, 1972.
The Ryukyu pine is said to resemble the Japanese black pine. It grows to a height of about forty feet, with crowns that spread as the years go by.
Ryukyu pines are often planted along roadsides. Easy to propagate, they are widely used in bonsai and in windbreaks.
