Akita, Gunma and Miyazaki all adopted the copper pheasant as their official bird. Miyazaki chose a subspecies native to southeastern Kyushu, the Ijima copper pheasant.

Named for the male’s metallic coppery-red plumage, the beautiful copper pheasant is a bird of coniferous and mixed forests.
