Missouri was the first state to adopt a bluebird, rejecting the South’s mockingbird, the cardinal that rules the Appalachians and Midwest, and the meadowlark that serenades the grasslands that spread from Missouri westward.

Missourians adopted the eastern bluebird, a species later adopted by New York. Its adoption is not well documented. According to state bird proponent Katherine Tippetts, the State Federation organized a state bird campaign, and the bluebird was adopted by popular vote. It was officially adopted on March 30, 1927.
