In 1926, Kentucky became the first state to officially adopt a state bird. Maine was one of seven states that adopted official birds the next year.

Maine’s State Federation of Women’s Clubs campaigned for the black-capped chickadee. The lack of information about the campaign suggests there were no serious competitors. The black-capped chickadee was adopted on April 6, 1927.

Forest-dwelling chickadees remain in Maine through the winter. This is a clue that it’s a seed eater, since insects are scarce in winter.
