Kyoto’s Prefectural Tree

Japanese red cedar (Kityama cedar)

The Japanese red cedar is a member of an ancient family that includes the North American redwoods and bald cypress (Louisiana’s state tree). One of Japan’s most beloved trees, it was adopted by Akita, Kochi, Kyoto, Nara and Toyama.

Except for Nara, each prefecture has a special name for its tree; the best known seem to be Akita cedar and Kitayama sugi or Kitayamasugi. Kyoto calls its official tree Kityama cedar.
