Pittas are distributed primarily in tropical forests of Southeast Asia, with some species in Australia and Africa. The fairy pitta migrates the farthest north, from Southeast Asia to several spots in Japan, including Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.
Celebrated for its beauty, the fairy pitta makes a spectacular symbol. But there’s also a historical connection. According to fairy pitta researcher Eishi Uematsu, although the Fairy Pitta was put on record as early as the Edo Period (1603-1867), its breeding was first observed in Kochi in 1937.
