
Kanagawa calls the common gull its official bird, while Tokyo adopted the black-headed gull. Kanagawa’s designation may actually refer to all gulls; or perhaps it was later amended to specify the common gull.
The gull is especially appropriate because Kanagawa is the home of the Port of Yokohama, Japan’s ocean gateway. With its elegant form, it is also considered a symbol of peace.
