The Prairie State has managed to compile an exceptionally wholesome roster of symbols. It shares the violet, cardinal, white-tailed deer and monarch butterfly with several other states. But it’s tough for Midwesterners to choose unique species.
Nevertheless, Illinois has managed to designate a few unique symbols, including the bluegill and popcorn (the official snack food). Together, Illinois’ symbols advertise a place where life is simple but good.
Land of Prairie Presidents?
Even its nicknames are wholesome. No state is associated with a more popular president than The Land of Lincoln. The nickname Corn State describes a land of abundance, but Illinois is first and foremost The Prairie State, forever linking it to the era of cowboys and pioneers.
The motto, State Sovereignty, isn’t terribly imaginative. However, it rings like a call to arms in an era when corporations have taken over the federal government. Ironically, Illinois’ motto recalls America as it existed until just before Abraham Lincoln became President.
Plants
Illinois chose popular favorites for its state flower and tree. It shares the violet with New Jersey, Wisconsin and New Brunswick. However, only Illinois designated the entire violet family (Violaceae). The white oak also represents Connecticut and Maryland.
Illinois is best represented by its official grass, big bluestem. While several other states have adopted official grasses, only the Prairie State is represented by big bluestem.
Illinois’ other official plant symbol is popcorn, which was designated the official snack food.
Animals
Illinois adopted the most popular state bird and mammal, the cardinal and white-tailed deer. Its official insect, the monarch butterfly, is another popular favorite.
Illinois and Michigan both call the painted turtle their official reptile, while Illinois and Kansas designated different subspecies of tiger salamanders their official amphibians.
Illinois’ most unique animal symbol is its state fish, the bluegill.
Earth Symbols
Fluorite is Illinois’ official mineral, Drummer the state soil.
The Tully Monster is one of the most bizarre and unique state fossils.
Cultural Symbols
Illinois/Introduction is one of two dozen states that call English their official language. It is one of far too many states that gave the square dance the status of official dance.
The Great American People Show serves as Illinois’ “Official State Theatre of Lincoln and the American Experience.”
