Residents of Ibaraki were asked to choose a bird representative during Bird Week in 1965. The Eurasian skylark was chosen and recommended by the Council of Ibaraki Prefecture for Birds and Beasts. It was designated on November 3, 1965 based on the Regulations for Protection and Hunting of Birds and Beasts (Taisho 7 Law #32).
Like the North American meadowlark, the Japanese skylark is a favorite of rural residents, as recalled by the saying, “There is a Japanese skylark where there is a wheat field.” And Ibaraki is Japan’s best wheat-producing prefecture.
The skylark is also the official bird of Kumamoto.
