Hokkaido adopted one of the world’s most sensational birds as a symbol. The Japanese or Manchurian crane is also known as the red-crowned crane. In Japanese, it’s called tancho or tancho-zuru. The name “tancho” is written with the Chinese characters “red” and “summit,” which also indicates the crown of the head.

The tall, graceful bird is seen as a symbol of fidelity, good luck, love and long life in the Orient. White with black lower wings, it’s especially beautiful when seen against winter’s snow.

This sacred bird of the Orient also rivals the green pheasant as Japan’s unofficial national bird.
