Ehime’s Prefectural Tree

Pine

Ehime’s official tree is the pine. The prefectural website makes special reference to the Akamatsu, Kuromatsu, and Goyoumatsu.

Aka-matsu is the Japanese red pine, the symbol of Iwate, Okayama and Yamaguchi. Kuro-matsu is the Japanese black pine, symbol of Gunma and Shimane. It appears that goyo-matsu refers to one of two varieties of Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora)—parviflora or pentaphylla, better known as the five-needle pine. Or perhaps it refers to both.

The Japanese white pine is regarded as a tree of happiness and is popular in bonsai, as is the Japanese black pine. According to the prefecture’s website, “Pine trees dot the view of the white and blue beaches of the Seto Inland Sea.”
