Chiba’s Prefectural Tree

Yew podocarpus, longleaf podocarpus

The Japanese yew was adopted as Chiba’s official tree on September 29, 1966. Also known as the Chinese yew or Buddhist pine, it is a dense evergreen with pointed, leathery, dark green leaves arranged on stiff, symmetrical branches. The Japanese yew is unisexual and bears edible fruit.

The Japanese yew was chosen because it is well suited to Chiba’s climate and is the most familiar species to residents. Japanese yews are commonly seen in parks, along streets and in gardens.
