Arkansas adopted the mockingbird as its state bird on March 5, 1929. It was sponsored by the State Federation of Women’s Clubs.

The mockingbird was chosen because of its beauty and grace, its versatile song, and the fact that it is found throughout Arkansas. Arkansas is one of five states that adopted the mockingbird, the most popular state symbol in the South.
