Aomori and Shimane both adopted swans as their official birds. Aomori chose the Bewick’s swan, Shimane the whooper swan.

The whooper swan is the Old World counterpart to the North American trumpeter swan. It is also the national bird of Finland.

The smaller Bewick’s swan is a subspecies of the tundra swan, which also occurs in North America.
