The natural beauty of the area now known as Yatsuhashi in the city of Chiryu made a deep impression on one Sir Ariwara Narihira. Inspired, he wrote a Waka poem, with each line beginning with the five syllables which compose the the rabbit-ear iris’ Japanese name—Ka-ki-tsu-ba-ta.
The beautiful blossom was chosen as the prefectural flower in 1954.
