Can you identify the flags of any nations other than your own? Have you ever said the Pledge of Allegiance? Do you know what E Pluribus Unum means? What do you think about the Chinese dragon, the Big Dipper or the tulip on Iran’s national flag? What does a rainbow mean to you? What’s the most inspirational symbol you can think of?

Symbols touch our lives in so many ways! Symbols can be super cool, yet they can also be used in propaganda and brainwashing.

Smart people examine symbols carefully and try to understand them. Then again, some symbols really aren’t that complicated – like Finland’s swan or Kansas’ sunflower.

Whimsical African Flag

GeoSymbols originally focused primarily on “ecosymbols” – plants, flowers, minerals, fossils and soils adopted as symbols. But flags were another early favorite, and you'll find lots of interesting information about political symbolism here.

So if you’re looking for an exciting educational resource for students, teachers or independent thinkers, just remember California’s state motto Eureka!

GeoSymbols 2.0!

I’m in the middle of an exciting new upgrade that has two goals: 1) improve the existing site, and 2) finish what I started. (The original GeoSymbols site was never completely finished.)

Finished nations and states include Venezuela, Alabama and New York. I hope to have the project finished by about June or July 2013. To learn more, see About > Upgrade.
